What is AVIF conversion?

AVIF is a relatively new image format built on top of the AV1 video codec. It typically produces much smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency (an alpha channel) and animation as well. It was pushed forward mainly by the members of the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), including Google and Netflix. More and more websites now serve AVIF to speed up page loads, but plenty of image editors, submission forms, older devices and some apps still cannot open it.

How to convert AVIF files

  1. Load the AVIF files Drag them onto the dashed area, or click it to pick files. Selecting several at once is fine.
  2. Pick an output format Choose JPG if you are unsure; it opens everywhere. PNG or WebP keep transparency if the image has any.
  3. Adjust the quality JPG and WebP accept a quality between 50 and 100. The default of 92 keeps the loss invisible in practice while holding the file size down.
  4. Download the results Save images one by one, or use "Download all as ZIP" when you have converted several at once.

Tips for getting more out of it

  • Files are identified by their contents, not their extension. Some browsers attach no MIME type at all to .avif files, but the leading bytes are inspected so they convert regardless.
  • Because AVIF already compresses very efficiently, converting to JPG or PNG can make the file noticeably larger. The percentage shown next to each result tells you which way it went.
  • Choose PNG or WebP when transparency matters. JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so transparent areas turn black or white.
  • Feel free to drop a large batch in one go. Files are processed one after another, and an unreadable file does not stop the rest.
  • This tool decodes AVIF using your browser's built-in support rather than a bundled library, so it works in Chrome, Firefox and Safari 16+ without downloading anything extra. If a file fails to convert, updating your browser usually helps.

AVIF terms explained

AVIF
Short for AV1 Image File Format, an image format that applies the AV1 video codec to still pictures. It is known for high compression efficiency plus support for transparency and animation.
AV1
A video compression method developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Unlike HEVC (used by HEIC), it was designed from the start to be free of royalty payments.
AOMedia
A standards body whose members include Google, Amazon, Netflix and Mozilla. It leads the development of the AV1 codec and the AVIF format.
HEIF
The container format used by both AVIF and HEIC. The two differ only in which compression method sits inside the same kind of container.
Alpha channel (transparency)
Per-pixel transparency information stored alongside an image. AVIF, PNG and WebP support it, but JPG does not.
Lossy compression
Compression that cannot be undone but shrinks files dramatically. JPG, WebP and AVIF all work this way.
Lossless compression
Compression that restores the original exactly. PNG works this way, at the cost of a larger file in most cases.

JPG is lossy, so strictly speaking yes. At the default quality of 92, however, the difference is essentially invisible. Choose PNG if you want no loss at all.

AVIF compresses extremely efficiently thanks to the AV1 codec, so at comparable quality the JPG or PNG can end up larger. Lower the quality, or try WebP, which compresses better.

Side Note — Why AVIF was built to be royalty-free from the start

AV1, the video codec behind AVIF, was created in 2015 when Google, Amazon, Netflix and Mozilla, among others, formed the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) to develop it jointly. Microsoft, Apple, Intel and most of the rest of the major tech industry eventually joined too. The goal was singular: build a video compression method anyone could use without worrying about patent royalties.

The motivation traced back to the confusion surrounding HEVC (H.265), the dominant codec at the time. HEVC compressed extremely well, but its patents were scattered across several competing licensing pools, and companies trying to pay their way to full clearance often could not work out who to pay, or how much. That uncertainty was a big part of why browser makers were slow to adopt HEVC in the first place.

AV1 answered that problem by having its member companies license their relevant patents to each other royalty-free as part of the standard itself. Wrap AV1 in the HEIF container and you get AVIF, effectively HEIC's sibling format. Tellingly, the major browsers went on to support AVIF natively while continuing to leave HEIC alone — and that same native support is exactly why this tool can convert AVIF without bundling any extra library.

It is a case where the licensing philosophy, not just the compression numbers, decided how quickly a next-generation image format could spread.
