What is an EXIF Viewer?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata that digital cameras and smartphones automatically embed in image files. It can include the capture date and time, camera model, lens type, exposure settings such as aperture and shutter speed, and even GPS coordinates showing exactly where the photo was taken — none of which is visible in the photo itself.

Tips for getting more out of it

  • Major social networks like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook automatically strip EXIF data — especially GPS location — when you post an image. That is why photos downloaded directly from those platforms usually show no metadata here.
  • Screenshots are not taken with a camera, so they normally have no EXIF data at all. That is the most common reason you will see "no metadata found."

EXIF terminology

EXIF
Short for Exchangeable Image File Format, a standard for embedding capture information inside image files, established by Japan's JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association).
Aperture (F-number)
A number describing how wide the lens diaphragm is open. A smaller number means a wider opening, giving a shallower depth of field with a blurrier background; a larger number keeps more of the scene in focus.
Shutter speed
How long the shutter stays open (exposure time). A fraction like "1/125" means 1/125 of a second — the smaller the fraction (larger denominator), the better motion is frozen.
ISO
The sensitivity of the image sensor to light. A higher ISO produces a brighter image in dark conditions but tends to introduce more visible noise (graininess).
White balance
A setting that adjusts colors so that white objects appear truly white regardless of the light source. "Auto" adjusts automatically based on the shooting environment; "Manual" is set by the photographer.
35mm equivalent focal length
A focal length converted to the equivalent value on a 35mm film camera, allowing angle-of-view comparisons across cameras with different sensor sizes.
Orientation
Rotation/flip information, based on how the camera was held (portrait or landscape), used to display the image the right way up.

The EXIF standard was established in 1995 by Japan's JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association). At the time, the industry was transitioning from film to digital cameras, and each manufacturer was recording capture information in its own proprietary format — meaning that information could be lost the moment an image was opened in a different piece of software. EXIF was created to solve exactly this problem, embedding capture data inside JPEG files in one unified format that any application could read.

Today, EXIF support spans nearly every capture device, from smartphone camera apps to high-end DSLRs. That is why photo-management software can automatically sort images by capture date, and mapping apps can automatically pin photos to the location where they were taken — regardless of which manufacturer made the camera.
