What is tap tempo?
Tap tempo is a feature that works out a song's BPM (Beats Per Minute) by timing how far apart your taps are as you tap a button or key along with the beat. It's a common feature on DJ mixers, guitar pedals, and DAWs (music production software), and this tool brings that single feature to your browser on its own.
When you don't know a song's tempo, guessing the exact BPM by ear is hard, but tapping along with the rhythm is something anyone can do naturally. The tool averages your last few tap intervals, so the result stays stable even if your timing drifts slightly.
How to use tap tempo

Tips for getting more out of it
- The more taps you make, the more small timing variations get averaged out, improving BPM accuracy. Aim for at least 4 taps, ideally 8 or more.
- Tapping with the space bar lets you keep your hands on the keyboard, which is handy when measuring tempo while producing music on a computer.
- The history resets automatically once more than 2 seconds pass since your last tap. To measure a different track, just start tapping the new beat right away.
- The BPM result also shows the length of a single beat in milliseconds, which you can plug straight into tempo-synced delay or LFO settings.
- The intro of a track can drift slightly in timing, so tapping during a steadier section of the song, once it settles in, tends to give a more accurate reading.

Side Note — Where did the tap tempo button come from?
Tap tempo as a way of controlling gear spread widely in the 1990s, alongside the rise of digital delay units and DAWs. Guitarists and DJs performing live had no time to type in an exact tempo number mid-song, so gear makers gave them a "TAP" button they could simply hit in time with the beat instead. That single idea found its way into countless digital effects pedals and drum machines.
DJ mixers and CDJs carry the same feature: even when a track has no embedded BPM data, tapping along for a few beats gives a DJ a usable tempo reading in seconds. Because it lets a performer check the tempo instantly during a live set, the feature is still standard on much of today's professional gear.
