An Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK) tracker records the daily results of an over-the-counter urine LH test over time and automatically identifies the peak day of your LH surge, the sharp rise in luteinizing hormone that occurs just before ovulation. Because ovulation is generally thought to happen about 24-36 hours after the LH surge is first detected, knowing the peak day lets you work backward to an estimated ovulation date and fertile window.
Basal body temperature methods (such as the coverline method) detect the temperature rise that happens after ovulation has already occurred, whereas an OPK captures the hormonal change that happens just before ovulation, making it useful when you want an earlier heads-up on timing. You only need to log each day as negative, faint positive, or peak — there is no need to track precise numeric values. The sharp rise in luteinizing hormone (LH) just before ovulation is said to have been identified through mid-20th-century endocrinology research. Before that, basal body temperature changes were the main clue to ovulation timing, but since temperature only shifts after ovulation has already happened, it offered limited help for anticipating a fertile window in advance.
Home urine tests capable of detecting the LH surge are said to have become practical from the 1980s onward. Being able to catch, with a simple at-home urine test, a hormonal change that could previously only be measured through blood tests marked a major step forward from temperature-based methods, allowing ovulation to be anticipated ahead of time rather than confirmed only in hindsight.
