There is no fixed rule -- more rungs give you more frequent access to your money but spread your funds thinner across each term. Four to six rungs (for example 3, 6, 9, and 12 months) is a common starting point that balances liquidity against simplicity.

Most CD ladder strategies call for reinvesting the full payout (principal plus interest) into a new CD at the longest term in the ladder, which is what this calculator assumes. You can also choose to withdraw a matured rung instead if you need the cash.

It depends on the rate environment. If longer-term CDs pay meaningfully more than shorter ones, a ladder can earn slightly less than locking everything into the longest term, in exchange for periodic liquidity. If rates are flat across terms, a ladder and a single CD earn about the same.

Future CD rates are unknown, so the calculator holds each reinvestment rate constant as a simplifying assumption, the same approach used by most CD ladder calculators. Revisit the projection with updated rates whenever a rung actually matures.

Side Note -- Why Ladders Became Popular When Rates Started Moving Again

CD laddering is an old idea, but it saw renewed interest once central banks began raising interest rates sharply after years of near-zero yields. When rates are rising, locking a large deposit into one long-term CD risks missing out on even higher rates a year later, so savers spread deposits across several terms to keep some cash rolling into new CDs at the latest, and often better, rates.

The opposite is true when rates are expected to fall: savers who believe today's yields are unusually good sometimes prefer a single long-term CD to lock in the rate for as long as possible, rather than a ladder that keeps exposing part of the balance to reinvestment at lower future rates. Neither approach is universally correct -- it depends on a saver's view of where rates are headed and how much access to cash they need along the way.

In practice, many ladders are built with unequal terms on purpose, front-loading shorter rungs (3 or 6 months) so the first few reinvestment decisions come quickly, while longer rungs (9 or 12 months, or beyond) anchor the ladder with a higher fixed rate for the funds a saver is confident they will not need soon.
